May 28th Statement to SFAI Board of Trustees from Concerned Students and Alumni

On May 28, 2009, members of Concerned Students & Alumni of the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI Student & Alumni Action Group) gave a Statement to the Board of Trustees at the SFAI Trustee Meeting.  The Trustees were provided updates on student and alumni activism, the growing support for the reinstatement of tenured faculty, and the pledge of some students to participate in an economic boycott in the form of a tuition withholding from SFAI if the tenured faculty are not reinstated.   The Statement mentioned:

  • Over 1,100 students, alumni, staff, artists, curators, educators and concerned others have signed Petition to Reinstate;
  • The Grievance Review Committee found multiple violations by SFAI of the faculty contract, and unanimously recommended rescinding the tenured faculty layoffs;
  • A Vote of No Confidence in the Administration is circulating;
  • At least 25 students have pledged to withhold their tuition for next semester, representing about $750,000, until the faculty are reinstated.
Not one Trustee in attendance responded to the statement or asked any question.  SFAI President Chris Bratton was also in attendance but offered no comment or question to the action group members.  "It was like talking to a pile of logs," said one of the action group members.
