"At the 2009 Commencement at the San Francisco Art Institute, members of the SFAI community wore pink in support of students, faculty and staff. SFAI administrators had recently decided to layoff about 25% of tenured faculty and to launch a new School of Design, acts which many believe may compromise the quality of education and the reputation and legacy of the campus.

SFAI administrators were adamant about stopping the expression of Pink Support at Commencement. The distribution of pink informational leaflets by students was banned on campus, and at least one student was threatened with arrest for handing out pink armbands. SFAI administrators called the San Francisco police to have a peaceful supporter arrested for passing out pink felt armbands, and that person was escorted off campus by police. Despite this, some courageous supporters wore pink. Highlights: The eloquent undergraduate commencement speaker urged support of faculty and students, and wore a pink armband on stage; some brave graduates passed out pink slips to certain SFAI administrators on the commencement stage; unknown individuals unfurled a banner that said REINSTATE! on the campus tower."
